WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Kirwee.—Mrs R. W. McMeekan presided at the monthly meeting of the Kirwee Country Women’s Institute, held 'in the lounge of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association Hall. The Rev. I. G. Ryeburn

gave a talk on .poetry. A sales table realised a satisfactory amount. The social quarter-hour arranged by Miss M. Colee was won by Miss J. Redmond. Hostesses

were Mesdames R. Watson and W. Day. The monthly competitions resulted:— Large bloom: Mrs E. Thompson 1. Mrs G. Seaton 2, Mrs D. Westaway 3. Small bloom: Mrs R. Pascoe 1. Mrs G. Redmond 2, Mrs Westaway 3. Crocheted article: Miss J. Redmond 1, Mrs Westaway 2, Miss H. Henderson 3. Prettiest sweets dish: Mrs Redmond 1, MrsG. Gallagher 2, Mrs Westaway 3. Christchurch Centre.—-The monthly meeting of the Christchurch centre of 'the Country Women’s Institute was held in the Orange Hall. Mrs P. Champion presided. Mrs Smart read a report on the federation meeting, held in Christchurch. The president reported that the committee proposed organising a trip to Dunedin, where the Dunedin centre would be visited. The drama circle presented a short sketch entitled “Operations,” those taking part being Mesdames Harris, Keen, and Cook. Those in the entertainment item were Mesdames Champion, Heslip, Compton, Ford, McGowan, Smales, Goss, Beattie, Small, Anderson, Rae, Edmonds, Bain, Clarke, Hales, and Ray. Results of competitions were as follows:—Cushion: Mrs McGowan. White spray: Mesdames Heslip 1, Henshaw 2. Large bloom: Mesdames Candy 1, Merry 2, Henshaw 3. Small bloom: Mesdames Kenny 1, McGowan 2, Jenkin 3. Arrangement of leaves and berries: Mesdames Merry 1, McGowan 2, Henshaw and Dawson (equal) North Beach.—Mrs Lack presided at the monthly meeting of the North Beach Country women’s Institute. Four new members were welcomed. The singing, drama, and gardening circles reported good progress. Arrangements were made to form a dressmaking class. Results of competitions —date scones: Mrs Taylor 1, Mffi Duder 2, Mrs Lack 3. Needlework: Mrs Roscoe i, Mrs Taylor 2. Large bloom: Mrs McQuarrie 1, Mrs Hessan 2, Mrs Warren 3. Small bloom: Mrs Margetts 1, Mrs Hessan 2, Mrs Taylor 3. Cluster: Mrs Roscoe 1, Mrs Margetts 2, Mrs Cook 3. Spike: Mrs Hessan 1, Mrs Duder 2, Mrs Taylor 3.
