POST OFFICE HOURS
b SATURDAY CLOSING CHANGES ATTENDANCE DURING WEEK-END The introduction, when possible, of Saturday closing to the Post and Telegraph. Department has led to many changes in Post Office hours in the Canterbury district. These were summarised yesterday by Mr D. R. Thomson, Chief Postmaster at Christchurch, as follows: - Outward mails will close at the Chief Post Office at noon each Saturday, but North Island late fee closing time will be unaltered at 6 p.m.
Closed all day Saturday under the new schedule, the Money Order and Post Office Savings Bank branch will open each Friday evening between 6.30 and 8.30 o’clock. Parcel post stamp counters will be open each Friday evening between 6.30 and 8.30 o’clock, and their Saturday hours will be from 8.30 until 11.30 a.m. Postmen’s deliveries will be made as usual on Saturdays, and the telegraph counter udll also keep its present week-end hours, closing at 10 o’clock on Friday night, and opening each Saturday from 8.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. The motor registration branch wil] observe the new Saturday closing, but this will be offset by additional Friday night hours—from 6.30 to 8.30 o’clock. The telegram delivery system will be unchanged. The High street and Sydenham branch offices will close on Saturdays, but will be open on Friday evenings between 6.30 and 8.30 o’clock. All the other suburban offices will open each Friday evening from 7 till 8 o’clock, and close on Saturdays.
At New Brighton, Sumner, and Hanmer Springs (where Saturday is not the usual holiday) hours of opening will remain as at present. Permanent post offices in country districts will open each Friday evening from 7 o’clock till 8 o’clock, and will close on Saturdays. The only exceptions to this are Ashburton and Rangiora, where the offices will open from 6.30 to 8 7 o’clock on Friday evenings and the public counters will be open between 9 and 11.30 a.m. epch Saturday morning. Hours of attendance at telephone exchanges remain undisturbed, and the usual after hours facilities for lodging telegrams and toll-calls will be retained.
Non-permanent and railway post offices will remain open on Saturdays, but will close at 11.30 a.m. They will not open on Friday evenings.
