ATTEMPT TO OPEN BANK SAFE
EXPLOSION JAMS LOCK (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 27. Thieves who broke into the National Bank of New Zealand in Otahuhu early on Tuesday night and attempted to blow open one of the safes with gelignite were foiled when the locking mechanism jammed and prevented them from stealing a substantial sum of money. Although one of two men acting suspiciously near the bank was seen about to climb over a fence into the bank property, and at least five residents heard an explosion about 9.30 p.m., the affair was not reported to the police until after the bank was opened yesterday morning. The thieves climbed a low fence at the side of the bank and prised open a window at the back of the building, which has only one floor and no strongroom. It took an experienced locksmith about five hours to unfasten the safe locking mechanism. All the money was found to be Intact, and as far as it is known nothing else was stolen by the intruders.
