UNLIGHTED BICYCLES

Sir,—As an ex-cyclist and present motorist I often wonder how many cyclists realise what little margin of safety a rider of an unlighted bicycle can rightly expect from even the most careful of motorists. To give an instance: between 7.15 and 7,40 a.m, today I travelled over my regular route, Clyde road, Riccarton road, to Hornby. At 7.30, daylight was beginning to appear, though no motorist would be justified in switching off headlights. Yet, before the half hour I passed 89 unlighted bicycles and only 10 with lamps going. This Is no unusual case. It happens every morning- before daylight on all the city roads; I write, not in anti-cyclist vein, but in earnest endeavour to point out to the road-using public that regulations are designed for their own personal safety,—Yows, etc., DRIVER.
