HUMANE TRAPPING

Sir, —I was hoping for a better response to the suggestion of E. C. Studholme about a humane rabbit trap (May 13). I experimented myself some years ago with a small pen made of rabbit netting with a tunnel entrance of the same material from the outside to the middle of the pen. I made the tunnel large enough to for a fullgrown rabbit to get through without difficulty, and covered the “floor” with loose earth. I also dug up some earth inside the pen and scattered a few slices of carrot. Although rabbits were not very plentiful, I caught four the first night, but after that I only caught occasional ones, When the tunnel had been used a few times the rabbits appeared to be able to scent their way out. However, a simple device could be fixed that would prevent them from escaping,—Yours, etc., S.P.B. June 26, 1946.
