FREEDOM IN SPAIN

Sir, —As I have often said before, I have no subtle or sinister reasons for writing about Spain. I have simply tried to present the truth, as opposed to false Communist propaganda. If “A.T.H.” does not like the correspondent of the Chicago “Tribune” as a witness, I can offer him Sir William Beveridge, Mr Vernon Bartlett, Mr Arnold Lunn, and Mr Douglas Williams (of the London ‘‘Daily Telegraph”), all of whom have recenty visited Spain and report that conditions there are very different from the generally accepted Communist statements. Even if the Spanish Government were as black as it is painted, it would still be gross hypocrisy for such tyrannical governments as those of Russia and Poland to complain of it.—Yours, etc., G. F. SEWARD. June 25, 1946. [This correspondence is now closed.— Ed., “The Press.”]
