RESTRICTION OF BREWING
Sir,—ln your publication of June 18, under the above heading, you quote a reply from the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) about representations made at a public meeting in Christchurch that the brewing of beer should be restricted to save barley for food Whygive this reply of the Minister the title, “Restriction in Brewing.” Restriction in brewing is not mentioned or contemplated by the Minister; stabilisation is the word most suited to his letter. Are vested interests and easy taxation of supreme importance where starving multitudes are concerned? Thousands of tons of barley went into beer last year—a record year. The Minister states that “there will be no increase in last year’s usage of barley for malting.” Is that succour to crying multitudes?—Yours, etc., June 25, 1946. E.R.A. |
