KEEPING SPAIN BEFORE UNO

FRENCH DELEGATE’S DEMAND

“ISSUE TOO IMPORTANT TO DROP”

NEW YORK, June 23. The French representative of the United Nations Security Council (M. Parodi), in a broadcast speech, demanded that the Spanish question should be kept before the United Nations, in spite of the killing of the sub-committee’s recommendations by Russia’s veto. “After the stand taken by the Security Council on the Persian issue, we cannot afford to let the Spanish issue drop,” he said. “We must not give up. This issue is too important. “We must not permit conditions to exist in Spain which might make it a springboard for some future war. It is essential that some action should be taken against General Franco.” It is reported that Poland' is drafting some type of proposal to keep the issue on the agenda when the Security Council resumes to-morrow.

Russia exercised the power of veto at the Security Council last week when Dr. H. V. JCvatt (Australia) introduced his proposal for a compromise resolution on Spain. Nine members of the Council voted for the compromise resolution, with the Netherlands abstaining from voting, but Russia voted in the negative and the chairman (Senor Najera, Mexico) announced that the sub-committee’s recommendation on Spain, proposed by Dr. Evatt, had been vetoed.
