SOVIET TROOPS IN STOLEN JEEP

TWO AMERICANS, ONE RUSSIAN WOUNDED LONDON. June 23. “A Russian soldier in a stolen American jeep, shot and wounded two American policemen who ordered the jeep to halt,” says the Vienna correspondent of the Associated Press. “The policemen were shot in the head but they are expected to live. “The policemen were ordered to look out for the jeep, and they recognised it with four Russian soldiers in it approaching the American district of Vienna. When ordered to halt, one of the Russians opened the door and fired. “American police, searching for the occupants of the jeep, shot a Russian soldier, who was sent to hospital. One Russian was detained. “The shooting followed weeks of unrest among Allied troops. A fight developed among Russians. British, and French a few days ago.”

MACHINE FOR CABLE MESSAGES

250,000 WORDS EACH MINUTE

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON. June 24. A machine capable of handling all of Britain’s daily outgoing cable traffic in three minutes was the subject of experiments by Mr J. L. Baird, the British television pioneer, just before his recent death. Cable and Wireless. Ltd., has brought Mr Baird’s experiments near fruition and hopes to use the invention soon.

The. machine will pour out messages from Britain to the world at 250,000 words a minute, compared with the present machine’s rate of 120 words a minute. The machine photographs messages which are then transmitted on ultra-short waves through intermediate stations at the rate of 25 photographs a second.

EUROPEAN COAL Output

INCREASE DURING MAY LONDON, June 23. The coal output in western Europe rose sharply during May. European coal organisation figures show that western Germany increased its production by more than 400,000 metric tons and France by nearly 100,000 tons. German production for the month was 4,453,000 metric tons and France’s 4.142,000 tons. The labour force in western Germany increased by 2000 and in France by 3000.
