SLANG PREFERRED TO “JARGON”

PROFESSOR .MURDOCH’S COMMENT , PERTH, June 24. Professor Walter Murdoch, Chancellor of the Perth University, speaking at a university dinner, protested against speakers’ use of the word “personnel.” “An official recently asked me for my ‘ceiling requirements in personnel’ instead of the maximum number of men and women I wanted,” he added. “In the language of to-day you do not go to see a person, but you contact him. “If, as a public speaker, I was forced to choose between such salutations as ‘male and female personnel’ and ‘guys,’ ‘dames,’ ‘blokes’ and ‘sheilas,’ I would select the latter. I prefer slang to jargon.”
