Calls to Fire Brigade.— A mattress, which was drying before a fire in a house at 23 Leeds street, was destroyed yesterday morning when a spark set it alight. The Christchurch Fire Brigade prevented further damage. The house is occupied by Mr U. Macfarlane. The brigade ffeceived a second call about 9 o’clock last night to the coal yard of R. Johnston, Ltd., in Waltham road, where there was a smouldering fire in a heap of slack coal. A brigade officer reported that the fire was being watched by an employee of the firm and that no danger existed.
