LINWOOD METHODIST CHURCH
DIAMOND JUBILEE The Linwood Methodist Church has been holding diamond jubilee celebrations during June. The opening services were conducted by the president of the Methodist Conference (the Rev. W. T. Blight), assisted by the minister (the Rev. H. W. Payne). More than 200 people attended the jubilee banquet and social. The cake was cut by two of the ladies’ guild’s oldest members, Mesdames E. Hoddinott and W C. Francis. The following Sunday “men’s day” services were held, the preacher in the morning being the Rev. Dr. D. O. Williams, of the Rugby Street Church. In the afternoon a rally for men only was held, invitations being previously extended to men of "the Methodist churches of Christchurch. The Rev. W. H. Greenslade, of the East Belt Church, gave the address. At the evening service the pulpit was occupied by the Rev. A. M. Costain, chairman for the district. “Women’s day” services were also held, the first speaker being Miss O. Duder. The evening service was taken by Mrs L. C. Horwood. The ladies’ guild held a reunion For ‘youth day” the preachers were Mr A. E. Lawry and the Rev Basil Metson. of Oxford. For the celebrations the choirmaster was Mr S. Harrington, and the organists Mrs S. Hodgson and Mr G. Thorpe. Special music was given by the choir, assisted by visiting soloists.
