RUGBY LEAGUE
CANTERBURY BEATEN EASILY WEST COAST PILE UP 39 POINTS AT GREYMOUTH From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, June 23. Although possessing an advantage in weight, and securing more than a fair share of the ball from the scnAns, the Canterbury Rugby League representatives were no match for West Coast in the Anisy Shield game, at Wingham Park, Greymouth, to-day, West Coast winning by 39 to 9. Apart from a strong wind, which favoured the home team in the first half, conditions were perfect, and the match was witnessed by a record crowd for the ground, estimated at more than 3500. There werd two changes in the selected teams, F. Neale replacing C. Davison, the Canterbury right wing, and K. O’Brien replacing A. McClure in the West Coast forwards. Both teams finished a man short, J. Newton, the West Coast vice-captain, and P. Smith, a Canterbury forward, being ordered off in the final quarter, following an exchange of blows in a scrum near the Canterbury line. Both had played leading roles irt the pack. The Canterbury backs failed through handling mistakes. These were also costly to the Coast, which failed to maintain the high standard set in the first halfhour, largely because of smothering tactics adopted by Canterbury. The visitors’ tackling was not always sound, permitting the Coast to break right through. The Canterbury forwards, particularly Gillman, shone in loose rushes, but did not feed the backs as well as their opponents. Some of the best Coast movements were those in which backs and forwards combined.
West Coast opened the scoring when W. Mountford backed up the winger, M. Teen, and broke through the full-back’s tackle in the corner. Newton missed the kick. The second West Coast try was a solo effort by the forward, J. Mundy, who sold dummies after securing in the loose. J. Soster converted. This was followed by a spectacular Coast movement, J. Curnow drawing the full-back for W. Mountford to touch down again. McNaughton converted. Off-side play by Teen saw K. Henry open Canterbury’s account with an easy penalty, but immediately after J. McNaughton kicked a penalty for West Coast. Just before the interval J. Newton secured an opportunist try from a scramble near the line, McNaughton converting. West Coast 20, Canterbury 2. Best Movement of Game Another penalty by McNaughton early added to Coast’s tally. In their best effort of the match R. Wilson, J. .O’Connor, Gillman, and Neale covered 75 yards in a passing rush, for Neale to score in the corner. Henry converted. McNaughton gained another two points from a difficult penalty kick, followed by a try by K. Mountford, who followed his brother through in a sharp dash down the sideline. Soster converted.
The next Coast try came from a solo run from halfway by J. Curnow. W’ho had an unopposed run after picking up in the loose. Soster again converted. Only good tackling by Soster and Mundy prevented R. Brown and Neale from scoring after a breakaway, but an infringement close in gave Henry an easy two points from a penalty. The final try was scored by M. Teen after a solo dash down the sideline, which caught tfie defence unprepared. Soster converted. .West Coast 39, Canterbury 9. The referee was Mr J. Williams.
