SHORTAGE OF TELEPHONES
“MORE ACUTE THAN EVER” COMMENT BY CHIEF POSTMASTER In recent months there had been no improvement in the supply of telephone equipment for new subscribers, said Mr D. R. Thomson, Chief Postmaster at Christchurch yesterday. “The shortage of switching units in the various city automatic exchanges, combined with the heavily-loaded state of the underground cabling system serving various parts of Christchurch, renders the position more acute than ever,” said Mr Thomson.. “The position cannot be relieved until new equipment, which is not yet available from overseas, is landed and installed.”
Practically the only new connexions that could be made at present came from the relinquishment of telephones, but those cases were relatively few, he said. Many discharged servicemen who had set up in business had been provided- with telephones, but because of the shortage of switching units there were still, a number of such applications which had not been satisfied. The provision of telephone service for the ordinary business or residential applicant continued to be a very difficult
