LABOUR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT
POSITION OF OLDER MEN
DISCUSSION AT PARTY CONFERENCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 18. ~ A move to oust the older men of the Labour Party from Parliamentary office because of their age was made from an Auckland quarter at the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party. A reply to a complaint about “old men” in Parliament was given by the national executive in its annual report, in which it said the future candidature of certain members of Parliament would be taken up with the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser).
Mr James Roberts, president of the oarty. himself one of the older members. drew the attention of the conference to the vigour of the Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple), who
was present at the conference, as an example of the contribution older men could still make to oolitical life. Mr Semole himself told the November conference of the party about plans to bring forward at the next election some nromisinc young men, narticularlv soldier candidates, including a panel of V.C. winners. Two of those mentioned by Mr Semole at that time as men it was honed to persuade •to stand for Parliament were Mr Keith FUiott. of Pahiatua. who has decided to enter the church, and Mr C. H. Upham, of Canterbury, who has taken up fanning.
