LECTURESHIP ON RUSSIAN

PROPOSAL FOR OTAGO UNIVERSITY (PA.) DUNEDIN, June 18. A suggestion that a lectureship on the Russian language Should be established at the University of Otago was made by the Chancellor, the Very Rev. D.‘ C. Herron, at the monthly meeting of the University Council this afternoon.

The matter arose when consideration was being given to a bequest to the university by Miss de Carle. The Public Trustee advised the council that Miss de Carle had left the residue of her estate to the university, and that it was estimated that it would amount to £lO,OOO.

The registrar, Mr H. Chapman, said that Miss de Carle had expressed a wish that the income from her bequest should be devoted towards establishing a lectureship in the faculty of arts, and that it should be known as the de Carle lectureship. “I would move that we ask the Professorial Board to report to us on the feasibility of establishing a lectureship on Russian,” said Mr Herron. “There is a big future for Russia, and we might, by such a lectureship, prevent ourselves from making serious mistakes as a result of not knowing Russian. It is only by knowing a people's language that we can understand the people,” he added. The motion was carried.
