ACCOMMODATION AT THE HERMITAGE
Sir, —I have read with interest some of the criticism offered about conditions at th£ Hermitage. I personally, in January, found both the cuisine and assistance from the management quite good, considering the times. Regarding amusements, the present facilities appeared most inadequate. The hostel should have, I think, more tables for billiards and tennis, a library, and a named panoramic map of visible mountain peaks. A nine-hole golf course and tennis courts would provide additional out-door amusements. The Black Birch stream should be bridged and all tracks to easily accessible huts, i.e., the Hooker, repaired, including the very steep descent to the Tasman glacier from the Ball Hut. The pig pens, too, are an undoubted eyesore, and should be either removed or disposed with altogether.—Yours, PETER BENTLEY.
