LAWLESSNESS IN MALAYA

ARMED ROBBERIES DAILY DRASTIC, MEASURES PROPOSED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7.30 Rfin.) LONDON, June 16. “A vigorous offensive has been launched against lawlessness, which is still very serious throughout Malaya and in Singapore where armed rokrberies occur daily,” says the Singapore correspondent of “The Times.” “The Government is awaiting Colonial Office approval for measures which the Qovernor (Sir Franklin Gibson) says are ‘so drastic that they may give rise to political considerations? “On the Malayan mainland the death penalty is now imposed for carrying arms. Perturbing symptoms have been noted, indicating that much of this lawlessness is deeper seated, more highly organised and more distinctly racial than mere sporadic crime such as could be expected in unsettled postliberation conditions. “There is reason to believe that a powerful Chinese secret society is the central directing e force behind the many armed robberies, extortions, and even coastal piracies, particularly in northern Malaya.”
