MALVERN COUNTY COUNCIL

CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED

Cr. L. T. Wright was re-elected chairman at the annual meeting of the Malvern County Council. It was reported that the financial year, had ended with a satisfactory credit balance and the council was in a favourable position to overcome the set-back of the war years and commence its peace-time programme of work, including the sealing of the Darfield-Arundel highway, when the work was authorised by the Main Highways Board. The following sub-committees were appointed:—works, the chairman, Crs. A. P. Chamberlain, M. E. Jenkins, and P. L. Morrison; reserves, Crs. C. H. Adams, J. R. Cullen, James Deans, and G. C. Warren; water race, the whole council. The chairman was appointed local bodies’ representative on the MalvernTawera Patriotic Zone Welfare Committee. Cr. Warren was reappointed as the council’s representative on the executive of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund. It was reported that during the month the reserves committee had inspected the cemeteries under the council’s control and had decided upon an immediate scheme of work for their improvement. The purchase of a new truck to replace one of the older vehicles was decided upon, the selection being left to the works committee. Mr James Deans was appointed to fill the vacancy on the Malvern Electric Power Board caused by the resignation of Mr John Deans. The problem of getting rid of material graded from the shoulders of roads, without inconvenience to the owner of the frontage, was discussed. Jt was decided that the overseer explain to the occupier concerned the necessity for this work and seek his co-operation in accomplishing it wtih mutual satisfaction. The disposal of corded firewood and fallen trees in the South Malvern cemetery was left to Cr. Deans. It was reported that tip to the present £126 had teen raised in the county towards the Captain Upham Scholarship Fund The quota is £lBO. At the request of the postmaster (Mr P. D O’Connell) the council agreed to call a public meeting for the purpose of appointing a local committee to further the children’s health camp njovement.
