N.Z. DEFENCE LEAGUE

REVIVAL OF ORGANISATION SOUGHT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 15. Steps are being taken to revive the New Zealand Defence League. It was founded in 1936 to stimulate public interest in national .defence, and strongly advocated the reintrodnetion of compulsory military training. A strenuous campaign was conducted, the principal speakers being General Sir Andrew Russell, Sir William Perry and Major-General H. E. Barrowclough. The league carried on its educational work until the war began'and conscription was adopted. In view of the present state of the world it is felt that New Zealand can fulfil her obligations to the United Nations and provide for her own defence only by having adequate defence forces, and the league will advocate compulsory training for the three services. It is emphasised, that the league is a strictly non-party organisation.
