TWO WOMEN DEAD

CAR COLLIDES WITH TRAM OTHER PASSENGERS IN HOSPITAL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 16. One young woman was killed instantly—another died in the Auckland Hospital early this morning, and two men and a woman are in hospital as a result of a light motor-car in which they were passengers being involved in a head-on collision with a tram near the corner of Edwin street and Mount Eden road shortly before 11 o’clock on Saturday night The victims were:—

Killed Miss Margaret Wynne Gillespie, aged 26, of Mount Eden. Miss Rayma Jean Pringle, aged 38, of Mount Albert. '' Injured John Brown, aged 23, whose address is Y.M.C.A., Auckland. George Robert Kelly, aged 22, of Remuera. Misa Colleen Gould, aged 21, of Remuera. The motorman of the tram, J. O’Neil, was treated at the Auckland Hospital for shock, but was not admitted, and another passenger in the car, John Frederick Thuell, of Titirangi, was able to return to his home after being treated for lacerations to his head and shock.

The car, which was driven by Kelly, was proceeding along Mount Eden road towards the city, where the party intended to go to a dance. When the collision occurr«i, the tram was travelling from the city and was filled with passengers, most of whom had been to theatres. Residents nearby, who heard the noise of a violent impact, ran to the scene to find that Miss Gillespie, who suffered extensive head injuries, had apparently been thrown from the car and died instantly. Miss Pringle had received severe injuries to her head, and Miss Gould a multiple fracture of the leg, head injuries, and concussion. Kelly suffered a fractured jaw and fractured right arm. and Brown lacerations to his head ana concussion.

The injured people were sent to hospital in two ambulances, which were summoned by a bystander, but Miss Pringle died at 1.45 a.m. on Sunday. The car, which was a light sedan, was extensively damaged. The engine was pushed back into the body, and the steering column was forced into the roof. The body was considerably twisted and the front seat was recovered from beneath the tram. Only slight damage was done to the frorit of the tram.

Trams travelling along Mount Eden road were held up for half an hour until the damaged edr was removed. Brown's condition is satisfactory, but that of Miss Gould and Kelly is still serious. CAR-FALLS INTO CREEK DRIVER KILLED, PASSENGER INJURED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 13. When a light car left the road at Stokes Valley In the early hours of this morning and fell into a flooded creek, the driver was killed and the passenger admitted to hospital. They were:— Killed.—Stewart Francis Geddis, aged 28, married, with one child. Injured.—Neil Collins, Christchurch, injuries to head and ribs and shock. The men had served overseas together and were returning from an evening with friends. The night was foggy when the accident occurred. MAN FOUND DEAD ON RAILWAY FALL FROM TRAIN SUSPECTED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 16. An elderly man received injuries from which he subsequently died at Pukekohe.. He was Walter Adams, of Stratford. • Adams was found lying unconscious by the side of the railway track, just off the main platform, by a porter when he was walking to the north end of the Pukekohe railway station yard about 6 a.m. yesterday. It is not definitely known how Adams was injured, but it appears that he fell from the New Plymouth express, which arrived at Pukekohe at 5.45 a.m. Adams was to join his wife, who was staying in Pukekohe. CAR STRIKES POLE AT DOBSON From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, June 15. Two men, the occupants of a motorcar, which struck a telegraph pole in the vicinity of Dobson shortly before 11.30 o’clock on Friday night, suffered injuries and were admitted to the Grey Hospital. The driver, Robert Beauchamp, 29, a traveller, ot Wellington, suffered head injuries, and William Williams, 21, a miner, of'Taylorville, sustained injuries to a shoulder. The condition of each to-day was reported to be satisfactory. The car was extensively damaged. The force of the impact badly smashed the front of the vehicle and broke the telegraph pole into three pieces. The car rebounded into the swampy ground off the road, where it overturned. The pole carried 46 wires, and as a result of its collapse telegraphic communication between Greymouth and Nelson to Christchurch was lost. Repairs were carried out to-day. During the night, three wheels and tyres were removed from tne overturned vehicle by unauthorised persons. YOUNG FOOTBALLER INJURED AT MOUNT SOMERS Playing in a junior grade football match at Mount Somers on Saturday Alan Smitheram, a member of the Old Boys’ team, sustained injuries to a shoulder. He was taken to the Ashburton Public Hospital, where his condition was reported yesterday to be satisfactory.
