NEW WORKS PLAN
Sir,—Mr Semple proposed building an industrial railway from Sockburn to Papanui. Why not make this a passenger line? Could not the new Christchurch station be built where the Addington workshops are now in the shape of a triangle, its base formed by the Main South-Main North line and its sides by the Main. South-Lyttelton and Main North-Lyttelton lines respectively, with island-platforms running parallel to the sides as required? The Addington workshops are out of date and could be rebuilt at Linwood; the marshalling yards, more or less where they are now. There, would be a decent approach to the city, instead of past dirty old shops in lower Manchester street, and it. would have the effect of opening up Addington. Finally, at some time a through line and a through express will be required, and we should plan for that now.—Yours, etc., PROGRESS. June 14, 1946.
