ARMY’S MIDDLE EAST BASE
REPORTED PLAN FOR PALESTINE SITE LONDON. June 9. “Britain’s chief Middle East peacetime army base will be only about 120 miles from the Suez Canal,” says the Cairo correspondent of the “Daily Express.” “It is in Palestine, southwest of Gaza, where the Army recently bought vast tracts as a site for the base, which, it is said, will cost £1,000.000, and begins exactly 10 yards east of the Egyptian frontier. “Field-Msrshal Montgomery, who has arrived at Malta on his way to Cairo, is expected to arrive at Cairo to-mor-row on the first stage of his inspection of Middle East installations.’’
