COMMISSION ON LIBYA
PEOPLE’S WISHES FOR FUTURE
BRITISH PROPOSAL
wu av x LONDON, June 8. ivr 1 *! , de » utles of the four Foreign Ministers met in Paris to-day. the British representative put forward a proposal for a four-Power commission on Libya, suggesting that the American, Russian, and French representatives assist in finding out the wishes jf the Libyan people about their future.
According to this plan, the commission will fly to North Africa and reKort back on June 20 to the Foreign [misters.
The British proposal will first of all be referred to the United States. Russian, and French Governments. At a later meeting this afternoon, the deputies reached agreement on matters affecting the boundaries of Bulgaria and Hungary. The deputies also discussed hydro-electric power resources in the area of the Italian border, which is claimed by Austria. “Mr Gladwyn Jebb, head of the British delegation, brought before the Foreign Ministers’ deputies a proposal intended to break the deadlock over the future of the Italian colonies,” says the Paris correspondent of “The Times.” “He proposed, in view of Britain’s pledge to the Senussi not to countenance the return of Italian domination, that a four-Power commission of inquiry should visit Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, which have no governments to speak for the population, and report back on June 20. “Difficulties raised by the other members of the conference included the objection that there would not be time to carry out the arrangements.” The correspondent adds that the British proposal is likely to lapse from the sheer impossibility of getting a decision in time.
