PETAIN SUPPORTER RELEASED
ESPIONAGE CHARGES UNFOUNDED
(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) PARIS, June 8. The Ministry of War has issued a statement that the espionage charges against General Maurice Guillaume, one of Marshal Petain’s close supporters, have proved absolutely unfounded, and he has been unconditionally released. Earlier it was stated that French security police had arrested General Guillaume on a charge of co-opera-tion with the enemy. General Guillaume conducted North African affairs in Petain’s Cabinet during the occupation. “During those three years General Guillaume paid a monthly visit to the apartment of the head of the German Intelligence Bureau (Colonel Waag) and provided him with information gained from his being a Vithy official and from contacts with the army,” says a communique from the Ministry of Information.
