RECENT SALES

AUSTRALIAN BUYERS ACTIVE

Australian buyers of light-harness horses have been active in New Zealand recently, and besides securing Loyal Rey, which is now located in Perth, they have several horses awaiting shipment. SpencerVolo, Josalie, Sideline, and Rere Oro will leave Auckland this month, and a large draft for Mr H. C. Bishop’s'stud in Adelaide will leave Canterbury in* the next few weeks. Spencer Volo, by Spencer from Ellen Volo, was imported from America by Mr J. R. McKenzie in 1938, **and he will in future be at Mrs E. W. Bush’s Murray Park stud, South Australia. Josalie, a four-year-old mare by Josedale Grattan from Del Potts, and Sideline, a mare by Jack Potts from Lady Zora, were purchased by Mr E. A. Tatlow during his recent visit, and they are to go to his stud at Hagley, Tasmania. Rere Oro, which has been purchased by Mr J. P. Stratton, Perth, is an aged mare by Rey de Oro from Reremai, which is by Our Thorpe from the Grattan Abbey mare Grattan Maid. Together with the American-bred stollion Fremont, which was imported to New Zealand in 1936 by Mr F. Wallis, Gore, and the handicap horses Worthy Cross and Special Edition, Mr Bishop’s shipment includes eight brood mares and foals. Commenting on these, “Tuxedo” stated in a recent issue of the Australian Trotting Record that their breeding “dazzled one with splendour” and that Australia was fortunate in having a neighbouring Dominion where such modern high-class blood is available.

Mr Bishop visited New Zealand for the Easter sales, and the mares he purchased include Daisy Hall, by Dillon Hall from Daisy Pointer, the dam of winners in Sir Gowan, Fascination, Frisco Lady, Mitaya, and Gallant Pointer. Like most of the mares bought, Daisy Hall is young. She is in foal to Grattan Loyal.

Willow Deene, by Quite Sure from Realeen, has a colt foal at foot by Light Brigade, and is in foal to the same sire, and Lawn Rose, by Grattan Loyal from Bonny Rose, has a colt by Jack Potts, and is again in foal to him. Royal Navy, which is by Frank Worthy from Derryvale, the dam of Navy Blue and Gallant Navy, has a filly foal by Brilliant Globe, and is in foal to Gamble. Amarita, by Jack Potts from Daisy Audubon, is in foal to Josedale Grattan.

Albertini, a half-sister to winners in Sterling Pointer and Strummer, is by Jack Potts from Albena, which traces to that grand producer. Norice. Albertini was foaled in 1932, and is in foal to Springfield Globe.

Acrozen is by Lusty Volo from a fast pacer in Colene Parrish, which is by Guy Parrish from Colene Pointer, the dam of some fine performers in Kingcraft, Village Guy. Kilrea, and Poker Face. Mr Bishop has carefully selected the foundation stock for his stud, and they should make a valuable contribution to the trotting sport in Adelaide. Jottings

Quite So’s record of five minor placings in five starts this season indicates that he should be .hard to beat in the Second Winter Handicap at the Cambridge meeting. Air Spray will be suited by the mile in the Murchison Handicap at Nelson.

Countless did not get a clear run in the Rakaia Handicap at the Ashburton meeting. and he may show up in the All Aged Stakes on the second day. Sure Note disappointed when he finished well back in the Allenton Handicap at the Ashburton meeting. Sabre finished gamely to win the Second Buckland Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, and on that form he will probably be sent out favourite for the Visitors’ Handicap at Cambridge tomorrow.

After showing up in the early stages of the Stewards’ Handicap at Ashburton. Maximum lost her chance when she broke in the straight.

May Win Again Driven by J. B. Pringle at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on May 18, Sura Wave gave a good display to win the Manakau Handicap by two lengths from Auto Chief, and on that form he should be the hardest to beat in the Cambridge Victory Handicap to-"morrow. Appeal Dismissed

After hearing evidence and carefully exI amining Rule 385, the appeal judges, who heard an appeal by the Auckland Trotting Club against a decision of the New Zealand Trotting Association ip disqualifying the horse Lone Raider for galloping in the December Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on December 27, 1945, decided that, on the liberal interpretation of the rule, F. J. Smith failed to comply with it and therefore the appeal by the Auckland Trotting Club would be dismissed. The judges, however, expressed the opinion that this rule might operate harshly in many instances. The judges also decided that the sum of £2O deposited by the club. in connexion with its appeal, be refunded. Has Won Two Races

The Lusty Volo gelding Aspanall, which is trained by C. R. Berkett at Blenheim for Mr W. Parkinson, showed good form on the northern circuit at Easter time. After being unplaced when he lost ground at the start of the Palmerston Handicap at the Manawatu meeting, he was taken to the Hawera meeting, where he had an effortless win in the second division of the Auroa Handicap. Later in the afternoon he was sent out favourite for the Normanby Handicap, and ran another good race to finish third to Twice Worthy and Kilcash in the first division. At his only other start he made a fast run over the last half-mile to win the Trial Handicap by a length from Caledonian Gold, with Golden Imp in third, place. Aspanall has shown that he is a ‘ smart three-year-old, and he will probably be sent out favourite for the Motueka Handicap at the Nelson meeting to-morrow. Has Some Form

Travis Boy has been placed in four of his last .five races, and he should graduate from the maiden classes at Nelson. On paper he appears to meet some weak company in the second division of the Murchison Handicap.

Good Record Quite Right, which will start from the 96 yards mark in the Brightwater Handicap at the Nelson Trotting Club's- meeting to-morrow, has recorded three wins and three minor placings in his six races this season. Trained at Richmond by L. F. Berkett for Mr J. Hunter, Quite Right was bred by Mrs R. C. Fisher, Christchurch, and is by Quite Sure from Beatrice, by Drusus from Carbines, the dam of winners in Norman Fox, Journey’s End, Norma Grattan, and Will Cary. Weakened

Limerick Pride looked well when he Caraded in the Harvest Handicap at Ashurton; but he disappointed when he failed to finish on, and was not in the first 10 to finish- after being in the lead at the entrance of the straight. The six-year-old son of Logan Fraser and Satin Queen was in fourth place to Real Nugget, Cumnock, and Scottish Lord with a furlong covered, and at the end of a mile he had worked his way through to lead from Cumnock, Scottish Lord, Real Nugget, Firewater, Dyrham Lea, Foredast, and Worthy Prince. Limerick Pride was evidently not suited by the soft track, and he did not show his usual dash over the last furlong. Fast Time

Indian Star registered the fast time of 2min 47 3-ssec from a 2min 59sec mark when he won a mile and a quarter event at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on January 12. Off the front of the Fencourt Handicap field, at the same club’s meeting to-morrow, he should race prominently. *

Smart Three-year-old « Caledonian Gold, a three-year-old gelding by Gaillard from Gretta Parrish, started off the season with three second placings in his first three starts, and he then followed up with a win over Indian Triumph in the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap at the Manawatu Trotting Club meeting on April 27. He has been unplaced in two starts since then; but he is highly rated by northern enthusiasts and may take part in the finish of the Fencourt Handicap at the Cambridge meeting this week. . Nelsonova

Nelsonova brought his record to two wins and seven minor placings for the season when he finished fourth to Sir Michael. Globe Direct, and Dandy Grattan in the Futurity Stakes at Ashburton. By Casanova frofri a Nelson Derby mare, Nqlsonova has proved a profitable proposition for Mr S. T. Webster, and he should carry on to good company as a four-year-old. Double Galted

Barrier Reef, a half-sister by Dillon Hall to Navigate and Master Mariner, is a double-gaited filly; but E. Todd, who trains her, intends to race her as a pacer. Rocks Ahead won her way to the best company and she took a record of 2min 39sec before being retired. Bred by Mr H. Hunter. Wyndham, she is by Happy Voyage from First Water, by Harold Rothschild from the Prince Imperial mare Red Diamond.

Lost Ground Early The three-year-old Certissimus filly Flame lost ground at the start of the Allenton Handicap, but. settling down, she quickly made up lost ground to follow Steel Sword, Billy McElwyn, Monitress, Julie and Appreciate with a mile covered. Once into the straight» she finished strongly in fifth place. On this display she seems assured of a place in the Longbeach i Handicap on the second day of the meeting.
