APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE

DECISIONS OF NO. I BOARD Appeals for three employees of a large welding firm in Christchurch, two of them grade 1 men, were heard by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday. Robert George Robinson, a fitter and turner, and Perclval Thomas Hurrell, a welder, had been called ior Army scrvice, and the appeal for John Charles Churchward was against Home Guard training, Mr T. M. Beadle, manager of the firm of Beadle Welding and Engineering Company, Ltd., said that about 60 per cent, of the firm’s work at present was for the armed forces, and that some of it could not be undertaken by any other firm in the Dominion. The Army’s need of grade 1 men was appreciated by the firm, said Mr Beadle, and efforts had been made to replace these men. Eight or nine welders, he said, had been tried In the last two years, but the best of these had for various reasons, been lost to the firm. The appeal against Churchward’s serving in the Home Guard had been lodged because he, with the other appellants, was often required to work on Sundays. The three employees, it was stated, always worked on Saturdays. The appeals were adjourned sine die, the appellants to serve In the E.P.S.
