TRANSPORT OF FRUIT
Sir,—Mr H. R. Sampson, the Canterbury Director of New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, is to be commended for exposing the tactics of the Internal Marketing Division in using very questionable means of preventing growers selling direct to consumers although the regulations definitely permit it. Through Mr Sampsons exposure of the department’s methods of transporting Lobum and Rangiora fruit to Christchurch, and then back to Kaiapoi and Rangiora the department gave direct delivery from lorry to local shops. Much of this fruit is crown less than one mile from the township. Now that the incident has died down, Mr J. A. Manton, manager of Internal Marketing Division, informs me to-day that the department has reverted to double transport—4o miles of extra cartage and several handlings Rangiora, June 10, 1943. [The Christchurch manager of the Internal Marketing Division (Mr J. A. Manton), commenting on this letter, said: “The distribution to retailers in Rangiora was suspended for a week only to put the retailers on an equiti able distribution compared with those in other Canterbury districts.”]
