AGE BENEFITS
Sir,—Many of the elderly people will welcome the slight increase granted by the Government to meet their rising costs, but there are many more who would have welcomed a removal of one of the anomalies, which compels both the husband and wife to reach the age of 60 years before receiving full benefit. Medical science tells me that where the wife is younger a more successful union is assured. In 75 per cent, of marriage contracts the wife is younger than the husband, yet under the Social Security Act, the wage-earner is penalised if his wife is younger, and after reaching the age of 60 years, must continue to work or accept the magnificent sum of £1 17s 6d weekly and eke out a precarious existence.—Yours, etc., R. FRASER DOWNS. June 15, 1943.
