MEDICAL ADVERTISEMENTS ACT
Sir, —Your correspondent “Makita suggests that the gazetting of the Medical Advertisements Regulations, which allow only recognised pharmaceutical drags to be advertised, will “cut out even the healing plant and herb, provided by God Himself.” Fortunately, this will not be so, for most of the healing plants and herbs which possess any therapeutic value are already known to the medical and pharmaceutical professions and extensively used by them. Research chemists are constantly at work investigating the medicinal properties of various plants and herbs. The truth is that there are no mysterious “herbs,” known only to herbalists and so-called “health specialists.” Only qualified men are allowed by law to fix a drain or to tinker with electrical installations, but in-New Zealand anyone with sufficient cheek can pose as a medical expert and advertise, compound, and sell to the public drugs and mixtures (sometimes of a dangerous nature) of which he has little knowledge or experience.—Yours, etc ANTI-HUMBUG.
