SPRINGBURN RAIL SERVICE
Sir,—How much longer are the residents of Mount Somers and Springburn going to tolerate the disgraceful service given them by the Railways Department on the Springburn line. Today I arrived at 2 p.m. with fat sheep to be trucked to the freezing works. As usual, we had to wait for the trucks to come up on the train due at 3 p.m. This train did not arrive till 7 p.m., and we had to truck in the dark. This state of affairs has been going on throughout the season. Apart from the time wasted, one wonders if four hours are lost on the trip up how many are lost going back; and, taking into consideration connecting trains missed, when do these sheep ultimately arrive at the works.—Yours, etc., WAKE UP SPRINGBURN. Springburn, June 9, 1943. [The Railway Department advises that owing to the previous day being King’s Birthday, no goods services were run on the Springburn branch that day. This caused the work on the branch to be exceptionally heavy on Tuesday, June 8, and resulted in extra shunting at stations en route, with consequent delay to the train. It arrived at Springburn at 6.45 p.m. No further time was lost on the return journey to Ashburton.]
