WAR LOAN
Sir,—ln the Budget debate Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., advocated that contributions should be made to the war loan without interest. I think this is an excellent suggestion. After all, it is no sacrifice to transfer savings from one interest-bearing account to another, especially where the money cannot be used by the depositor in any case. Also, is it fair that the burden of interest charge on the ‘‘contributions,’ 1 which will be met by taxation, should be borne by our boys when they return from the war? Surely, if our war effort is paid for in blood, sweat, and tears, it is not right that it should again have to be paid for out of the sweat and tears of debt bondage, for a better social order certainly cannot be based upon a morass of fictitious debt.—Yours, etc., W. B. BROCKIE. June 12, 1043.
Sir—With the object of encouraging the support of all towards the Third Liberty Loan would you be good enough to ask Mr Nash to answer the following question, either at the Civic Theatre on Monday evening or through your columns:—Many privately-owned businesses, both of national importance and otherwise, have, in accord with Government policy, been restricted to an extent making it extremely difficult to meet their normal obligations. Government officials have argued that the reason for this is the individuals in business are so engaged primarily because of the “profit motive," and they cannot therefore expect any consideration. In what manner does Mr Nash consider that such individuals can best assist the war effort, either financially or otherwise? The questioner will be present (by invitation) at the meeting on Monday evening and will there disclose his identity on request and in the meantime will remain,—Yours, etc., ANXIOUS TO HELP.
