WATER FOR RICCARTON
Sir,- —The objections raised by correspondents are valid —but there are others which should be mentioned. Ric* carton residents have gone to the expense of sinking their own wells, and usually these are satisfactory Why then should they be put to further exSense for high pressure water when us become* available? As the reticulation will be done only after the war (Which may last for many years), why spend money now on the mams ana have Rlccarton residents carrying an interest burden indefinitely in the form of Increased rates? When the poll was taken years ago, Riccarton residents emphatically turned the proposition down. We live in a “democracy”! Why should the people be forced further into debt without their consent? Local bodies have power to raise money irrespective of the approval of the ratepayers, but this iniquitous legislation does not make such an action ethical or democratic.— Yours, etc., DEMOCRAT.
