“ANSWERING YOU”
Sir,—l, tbo, was most interested in that particular shortwave broadcast from the 8.8.C. to North America mentioned by "Erewhon" m The Press” to-day. I heard that the British Ministry of Food is paying the farmer more for his products than the people are paying. The farmer in Britain is getting the cost of production, plus a reasonable profit for his hours of work. The consumer (not the farmer, and not the retailer, but the consumer) is subsidised by the British Government to keep prices stable. This policy has been more than justified by results. Since the fact of war should give no one greater profits, a farmer making more than £ISOO a year in Britain today is taxed 100 per cent. It is the average farmer who Is at last being given a fair chance. New Zealand, though not first with the vision to put farming on a fair and reasonable basis, can sit up and take notice,—Yours, etc., R.W.La* June 12, 1943.
