"ARIKI OF ARIKIS”
Sir,—Mrs Traill not only issues challenges without point, but is' :.n adept in casting the proverbial red herring. As never before, we want unity among the Maori people to-day. To make accusations against me of “trying to ride roughshod over the people of Te Waipounamu” is absurd, ungenerous, and unworthy of a rangatira. I have already stated that King Koroki never claimed to be “Ariki of Arikis.” Nor would he go where he would not be received with respect due to his high rank and people’s ■ mana. His appearance at Rotorua *re- : cently was most significant, and evidence that Ngati-Whakaue, never 1 Kingites, did not think it beneath ; them to pay him respect as te Kiingi Maori. Those of Ngai-Tahu who visited Ngaruawahia lately were generous in praise of what they saw. Let us think nationally, not exhibit an insular narrow tribal spirit. Heoi ano.— Yours, etc., ERIC RAMSDEN.
