NGAI-TAHU CLAIM

Sir,—ln 1937 I suggested the elevation of Mr Tirikatene, M.P., to the Legislative Council, as a reward from his pakeha friends. The proposed settlement of the Ngai-Tahu claim as stated by the Southern M.P. has carefully baited tags. The only just plan of settlement was given by the Royal Commission of 1920. Allow individual members of the Ngaitahu tribe the same rights as individual pakehas with their own money in war finance. Can Mr Tirikatene explain away why his elders have been allowed to live on in poor houses and drink polluted water as at Wairewa, and their wounded sons come home to such conditions. Yes, an election .is near; hence promises.—Yours, etc. W. A. TAYLOR. June 12, 1943.
