“ARIKI OP ARIKIS”

Sir,—Eric Ramsden knows as well as every Maori in this island that Koroki dare not go on to the courtyard of leading tribes in the North and South Islands and declare he is the “Ariki of Arikis,” and the King of the Maori race; because he knows he would be told where he jumped off pretty smartly. Therefore Eric Ramsden’s use of the term “Ariki of Arikis in his article seemed a bold attempt to ride roughshod over the people of Te' Waipounamu. If he thought he could get away with that sort of stuff unchallenged, he certainly had another think coming to him. Koroki belongs to Waikato and a few odd tribes thereabouts, but outside these he cuts no ice. Space being limited (this is where Eric Ramsden has the advantage) I will deal with the comment he made on my first letter, as soon as convenient. —Yours, etc.. HILDA M. TRAILL (nee Hira Moroiti Pohio). Kaiapoi, June 10, 1943.
