INDUSTRIAL APPEALS
Alice Jane Grammar told the Industrial Manpower Committee yesterday that even if she did not have to look after Tier mother she would not do a job as it would interfere with her evangelical work. She was appealing against the direction of the Manpower Officer directing her to employment with the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, Kaiapoi, and though she belonged to no particular church or religious body she said she was a follower of Christ and would spend her time in work for Him. At present, she admitted, her Christian work did not take much of her time during the day. The appeal was allowed on the ground of the state of health of her mother, but the chairman (Mr K. G. Archer) said that he did not think evangelical work should interfere with other duties, and suggested that she should do some part-time war work. Two employees of the Christchurch Tramway Board appealed against the decision of the Manpower Officer refusing his permission to terminate their employment after a dispute with the board. The chairman said that unless the board was prepared to give these two men back their usual work the committee would be prepared to allow the appeals, and adjourned the cases for one week. Other decisions were given as follows: —An appeal lodged by Albert James Aston against the direction of the Manpower Officer directing Shirley Dench to employment with the Co-op.
