COMPENSATION COURT

JUDGMENT IN GREYMOUTH CASE A sum of £537 6s 9d has been awarded John Michael Cassidy, a trucker, of Greymouth, plaintiff, in a claim before the Compensation Court against the Brunner Collieries, Ltd., of Wellington. Cassidy had been injured by an accident arising out of his employment in January, 1942. “Having regard to the medical evidence, the Court must award substantial compensation, in that the severity of the injuries received is agreed upon, and even Dr. Bird, who stresses particularly the neurasthenic factor, thinks that the injured arm will be precluded from heavy labour,” said Mr Justice O’Regan, in giving judgment. Seventy-two weeks had elapsed since the accident, and thus the remainder of the period of liability was 24i weeks. Usually the Court allowed three months’ total disablement for neurasthenia, but, having regard to th physical injuries, he had decided to allow one year in addition, making a total of 65 weeks, with 50 per cent, of full compensation for the remainder of the period of liability. Accordingly the amount payable, in addition to full compensation for 72 weeks would be 241 weekly payments of £1 18s Bd, £415 11s 6d; 65 weekly payments of £1 18s Bd, £l2l 15s 3d. a of £537 6s 9d. _
