MANY APPEALS BY BAKERS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 4. Many appeals by Auckland bakers were adjourned sine die by the Armed Forces Appeal CourJ to-day. Mr R. S. Harrop, secretary of the Master Bakers Association, said that Auckland had experienced a larger increase in the demand for bread than any other part of the Dominion. This was caused by the size of the armed forces there, in addition to the heavy demand from shops and restaurants. Men were being retained who normally went out of the bakehouses through age or inefficiency. To-day there were practically no apprentices. When second-hand machinery was advertised for sale there was a scramble for it. Women were employed as far as possible on delivery rounds, but did not total more than 10 per cent, of the roundsmen as the strain was too great for a large number to take up the work. Some returned men. or men released by the Army, had been tried in the industry, but had been unable to stand up to the work. 60 hours weekly being worked in the bakehouses.
