DIRECTED TO WORK IN MENTAL HOSPITAL
APPEALS BY YOUNG WOMEN (P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 2. About 20 appeals against the decision of the local Manpower Officer directing women, mostly young, to service as nurses at Porirua Mental Hospital were heard to-day. The Manpower Officer stated that every means had been taken to secure additions to the staff of the mental hospital without sufficient voluntary response. He quoted the Prime Minister’s statement that unless there was an improvement girls in other employment must be directed there. All the girls appealing had been medically examined and were reported fit for the work. The necessity of taking adequate care of the unfortunate in such hospitals was emphasised by the Industrial Manpower Committee. Decisions were reserved.
