OBITUARY
MR E. GATES The death of Mr E. Gates has removed one of the best-known breeders of thoroughbreds in Canterbury. MiGates also figured prominently as an owner many years ago, In 1880, at the age of 19, when living in his birthplace, Yorkshire, he saw an advertisement for a man to take two thoroughbreds to New Zealand, He put in an application and was successful The thoroughbreds were Miss Kate (ancestress of Phar Lap and Kindergarten) and Forget-me-not, and they.i were shipped to New Zealand in the! sailing ship Rangitikei. Their new owners were Messrs Wilkin and Carter, of Grove Farm, Ashburton, Mr Gates stayed on at Grove Farm, and managed it until the death of Mr Carter in 1886. He then purchased the i whole stud and entered into the business on his own account. He purchased part of the Lagmhor Estate of 1000 acres, and at this stud he bred the celebrated Lady Zetland from Forget-me-not. Mr Gates leased Lady Zetland for her racing career to Mr M. Hobbs, and in her last four races, she won the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, New Zealand Cup and Canterbury Cup, Sent back to Mr Gates’s stud, Lady Zetland produced Lady Lilian, who was raced by Mr Gates, for whom she won many good races, her most notable performance being her success in the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps in the one year, 1903, thus following in the footsteps of her dam. This double performance by mother and daughter was not equalled by any horse until the imported Grand Knight won both races in 1926.' Other horses raced by Mr Gates included Prime warden, Buccleugh. and Minerval. the last-named winning the Auckland Cup m 1933. He bred the well-known steeplechaser General Petain, and
