RUGBY FOOTBALL
CANTERBURY UNION MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE In sending a team ot 21 players to Westl port and Greymouth during the week-end | the management committee of the Can- , terbury Rugby Union last evening decided that all the players should have at least one game on the tour. Mr E. V. Phillips (president) said U was not fair to ask players to stand on the bank for two games, and his view was supported by Mr W. Cowles, who said that last year one player had been “carted all round the country” as an emergency and had not played in a representative match Mr O. Hattersley, a selector, said he understood the team had been selected as a team with emergencies. To put a team on the field at least three emergencies would have to be played Warrant Officer P. W Storrey, one of the selection committee, drew attention to the carelessness shown by first grade teams in the numbering of the players' jerseys. On one side there were .duplicate numbers, and some jerseys were not numbered. Such carelessness, said Warrant Officer Storrey. did not help spectators or selectors. It was reported that the takings at Lancaster Park last Saturday were £26 16s, while at Rugby Park a sum of £3l 15s was taken at the gates.
