VISIT OF N. WAIN WRIGHT

CANTERBURY CENTRE’S ANNUAL REPORT

A visit from Norman Walnwright, the British Olympic and Empire Games representative swimmer. Is mentioned in ti*® thirty-eighth annual report of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association as one of the features of last season. “Walnwright proved an Inspiration to our swimmers, and his willingness to coach and assist them was keenly appreciated,’’ states the report, which will be presented to the annual meeting of the centre on October report says that last season was a most successful one. There were 12 clubs and the Canterbury branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society affiliated to It. The centre regretted that entries for the Canterbury championships were not as large and public Interest not as enthusiastic as was expected. Cliff, Imin 11 4-ssec for 100 metres backstroke; H. Goldsmith. 59 2-ssec for 100 yards Intermediate boys and 2mln 25 4-ssec for 220 yards intermediate boys. Mr M. T. Butterlck, the educational officer, had shown great enthusiasm, says the report, and as a result of his efforts 2030 certificates were Issued in the district. It was estimated that 150 persons were taught to swim during the learn-to-swim week. L. Newell, D. H. Symes, and H. Hprsfall represented the centre at the national championships at New Plymouth, and Newell Is congratulated In the report on his outstanding success and his representation of New Zealand at the Empire Games.

“The finances of the centre continue to be something of a problem.” states the report, “and one that will require Immediate attention if strong representative teams are to be sent to the national championships this season.” The financial statement shows a credit balance of £l4 4s 4d, compared with one of £lB 15s last year. Assets are shown to exceed liabilities by £4O 4s lOd.

EAST CHRISTCHURCH CLUB The annual report of the East Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club which was presented to the annual general meeting recently, recorded that the club had enjoyed a most successful season. The club's congratulations were extended to Mr L. W. Newell on his performance at the New Zealand championship, and his selection to represent the Dominion at the Empire Games, and also to Mr A. T. F. Stokes, who captained the New Zealand team at the Australian surf championships. The following officers were elected: — Patron. Mr W. F. Herrick: president, Mr W. Horsfall; handlcapper, Mr A. T. F. Stokes; auditor, Mr C. G. M. Boyce; committee. Misses P. Hill, B. Bryant. Messrs W. A. Hume, A. J. Cameron, L. Donaldson, K. Cutting, J. Coleman, B. Roberts; delegate to Royal Life-Saving Society, Miss P. Hill; delegates to Canterbury Centre, Messrs H. T. Schou - , H. E. Horsfall, and M. T. Butterick.

OPAWA CLUB The annual meeting of the Opawa Amateur Swimming Club was held at the Opawa School. Mr L. Annand, the club’s patron, presided. The annual report and balance-sheet showed that the club was in a fairly sound position both in membership and financially. The renovation of the bath Included the rebuilding of the spectators’ stand, the tar-sealing of the bath surroundings, gnd the erection of a new high and low dive. It was hoped that everything would be ready for the new season. The following officers were elected:— Patron. Mr L. Annand: president, Mr C. Higgott; vice-presidents. Dr. E. H. H. Taylor, Canon G.
