POLICY OF N.Z. GOVERNMENT
EXTENSION OF SOCIAL SERVICES
COMMENT OF SCOTTISH NEWSPAPER
(TXOJt a~7M OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
LONDON, September 8. “The New Zealand Government’s policy of extending greatly its activities in the social services field at a time when chief primary producing countries are beginning to feel the effects of declining prices for their products has not unnaturally brought about a certain feeling of misgiving m the minds of those whose interests are closely allied with the Dominion,” says the “Glasgow Herald.” “At the moment the general outlook for commodity prices cannot be regarded as very promising, and while the current domestic policy of the New Zealand Government might not in any way jeopardise the future of the country’s overseas debt, it is impossible to ignore tbe fact that a high scale of expenditure on social services at the present time places the country in a more vulnerable position if it should have to contend with a trade recession of a major character.
