FIRE IN SHOP AT GORE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) GORE. September 30. Marcelline Isabeth, an elderly widow, a women’s outfitter, was charged with arson in the Gore Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr R. C. Aberriethy, S.M. The police gave evidence that a fire had been discovered in the accused’s shop in Gore on July 31. The police found 11 causes of fire. The front and rear doors of the premises were locked and there were no marks on them, it was stated. Firemen burst the doors and were greeted by a smell of kerosene. They found kero-sene-soaked material blazing in several places. One rack of frocks was destroyed. Valuers gave evidence that the warehouse value of the goods after the fire was £lßl, and the salvage value £IOB. An insurance clerk stated that the stock and fittings were insured for £790. The accused reserved her defence and was committed for trial to the Supreme Court at Invercargill on November 1. Bail was fixed at £l5O.
