Mr and Mrs John Farrell, who have been visiting Christchurch, left yesterday for the south. Mrs E. Aslin and Miss Eva Aslin (Dunedin) arrived in Christchurch from the south on Saturday night and are staying with Mrs R. J. McLaren, Cambridge terrace. Miss Aslin will leave to-night for Wellington on her way to London to visit her sister, Mrs L. Dimond. Mrs Aslin will remain in Christchurch for a time.
Miss Andrea Uniacke, who has been spending a few months in Christchurch,- will leave next Monday for her home in Stratford. Miss Wendy Bessant (Papanui) is visiting Wellington. Miss M. Owen, formerly of the teaching staff of the Southland Girls' High School, has left to join the teaching staff of the Waimate Girls' High School. Miss Elizabeth Blake (Mrs Stanley Natusch), who was responsible for the establishment in New Zealand of a branch of the British Drama League, has returned to Wellington after 16 months abroad, eight of which were spent in Cape Town. The sum of £6B 16s 7d was collected in a street appeal at Timaru for the Young Men's Christian Association and the Young Women's Christian Association. Included in this amount was £8 Is 5d raised at a stall in the old Bank of New South Wales building. Mrs Victor Hamilton and Miss Mary Hamilton (Sumner), who will leave next month for a visit to Australia, will be accompanied by Miss Winifred Philp, Opawa. Mrs Alister Mackenzie (Clayton Station) is visiting Mrs Simon Mackenzie, "Otumarama."
Mrs C. Cook (Te Awamutu), who has been visiting Mrs A. Dale (Albufy) and Mrs J. C. Macaulay (Mount Nessing), has returned north.
Mrs T. R. Rhodes (Hadlow) is the guest of her daughter, Mrs E. S. Elworthy (Four Peaks). Mrs Bruce Murray (Balmoral, Mackenzie Country) is visiting her mother, Mrs H. H. Hay (Dunedin). Later, she will visit her sister, Mrs Maurice Warren, Christchurch. Mrs Despard, the first president of the Women's Freedom League, and one of the first women to interest herself in the suffragette movement, celebrated her ninety-fourth birthday recently. It was hoped '.hat she would be able to attend a large party given for her by the league, but she was not well enough to do so. The party was held, and the cake, decorated with 94 candles, was duly consumed.. »

WHIPPET RACING CLUB TROPHIES PRESENTED AT DANCE Many supporters and friends attended, a dance given by the New Brighton Whippet Racing Club in the social hall of the Returned Soldiers' Association. During the evening the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E, L. Smith) distributed the trophies won at the meeting held earlier in the day. ■ Arrangements were made by a committee comprising Messrs D. A. Clarke (president), G. Nankivell (secretary), E. Johnson, F. Arnold, H. Fitzsimmons, S. Hooper, W. «ecker, W. Gobbe, D. Briggs. J. Morton. Music was E laved by the Jayet orchestra, and Mr i. R. Moore was master of ceremonies.

Y.W.C.A. NEW BRIGHTON COMMITTEE MEETS Miss P. Hindle presided at a meeting of the newly-formed New Brighton committee of the Young Women's Christian Association. Mrs Williamson explained that the association had opened at New Brighton in 1935 with 30 members. At present there are about 18 members and it was hoped that with the assistance of the new committee there would be a considerable increase in the activities and in the membership in. New Brighton. Arrangements were made to hold a social and dance. The Mayoress of New Brighton (Mrs E. L. Smith) was elected president and Mrs W. Furneaux secretary. EUCHRE PARTY Successful players at the weekly euchre party held in aid of the Templeton school dental clinic were Mrs W. J. Taylor and Mr W. Hall. Mr Stoddart, secretary of the school commttee, urged parents to assist the clinic by attending social gatherings organised by the committee.

CUST DIVISION ENTERTAINS
A successful dance organised by the Cust division of the St. John Ambulance was held in the Public Hall, which was decorated with coloured lights, greenery, and streamers. A lucky spot dance was won by Mr and Mrs E. Wayland, and Monte Carlo dances by Miss Foster and Mr M. Leslie, Miss Monica Salter and partner. . Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr George Bradford's orchestra (Christchurch), and extras were played by Miss J. Smith, Messrs P. Pachnatz and V. Henderson. Messrs B. Early, Selwyn Cowens, L. NATIONAL PARTY'S DANCE
GATHERING AT TAI TAPU In the history of Tai Tapu no social function has drawn such a large and enthusiastic crowd as the dance held in the Tai Tapu ,hall on- Saturday night, under the auspices of the organising committee of the Riccarton branch of the National Party. The hall, which was decorated with spring flowers, blossoms, and national flags, was crowded, the attendance being estimated at about 600. During the evening Mr H. G. Livingstone, organiser for the party in Riccarton electorate, introduced the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, who thanked those present for their attendance. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, sitting National member for the electorate, spoke also, and Mr I. J. Wilson was introduced. He is the National candidate to contest the Lyttelton seat. Supper was provided by the ladies of the organising committee, and music was supplied by Fritz Seymour's orchestra. Benson, of Dunedin, who has been spending a few days in Christchurch on her way to Wellington to attend a meeting of the National Council of Women, was. the guest of honour at a pleasant party given in the grey room at Beath's on Saturday morning. Mrs Benson was formerly Dean of the Faculty of Heme Science at the University of Otago, and the gathering was arranged by the Christchurch alumnae of the School of Home Science, to give them an opportunity of renewing acquaintance with Mrs Benson. Mrs D. McK. Dickson welcomed Mrs Benson, who gave a short talk on women's part in world affairs. We cannot free our life from difficult situations, she said, but love liberates us from fear. It was essential for women to cultivate a better understanding of each other, to offer kindly criticism, and show good will towards others. Those present were Mrs Dickson, Miss B. Loy, Miss Wilkie, Miss Z. Wild, Miss M. Moore, Mrs Hawkes, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Gabites, Mrs Pope, Miss Chapman, Miss Gunn, Miss Jackson, Miss Forbes, Mrs Allan, Miss Stenhouse, Miss Fuller, Miss Keys, Mrs Noble, Miss Aitken, Mrs Hughes. Miss Chambers, and Miss Watson. DANCE AT WEST EYRETON An enjoyable dance, organised by the West Eyreton Tennis Club, was held in the West Eyreton Hall. The committee responsible for the arrangements, comprised Misses M. Addinell, A. Dixon, K. Dixon, Messrs P. Eder, C. Patient, and J. Wolff. Music for dancing was supplied by Millers' Band, and novelty dances were won by Miss A. Dixon and Mr Kay, Miss E. Brain and Mr Campion. Mr P. Eder was master of ceremonies.
