OBITUARY

MRS C. BURT ' The death occurred recently" of Mrs Catherine Burt (Curlett's road. Upper Riccarton), wife of Mr A. J. H. Burt. Mrs Burt was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs D. H. Mackinnon (Arahura road, Hokitika), and was a native of Ross, Westland. She was educated at St. Coluniba Convent, Hokitika, and lived the earlier part of her life on the West Coast. For some years she resided in Dublin, but later returned to New Zealand and settled in Christchurch. Besides her husband, she is survived by one sister, Mrs J. W. Graham (Lower Kokatahi), and a brother, Mr J. A. Mackinnon, a surgeon, of London- Mrs Burt was well known in Riccarton, and was a keen worker and loyal supporter of the Catholic Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Theresa's Church, Puriri street, the -services at the church and graveside 'being conducted by the Rev. Father T. Hanrahan, assisted by the Rev. Father Joyce. The large attendance at the church and Waimari Cemetery testified to the great esteem in which Mrs Burt was held.

WEST OF ENGLAND SOCIETY

To honour West of England ratings on H.M.S. Achilles, members of the Canterbury West of England Society held a most enjoyable farewell social in the Orange Hall.

Mr P. E. L. Broad welcomed the guests of honour and a large number of members and their friends. Members had many pleasant memories of previous gatherings, said Mr and to the visitors, who were returning to England, he wished a very pleasant voyage, and sent greetings to their home folk. During the evening competitions were won by Mr and Mrs A. Porter, Miss R. Johnson and Mr S. Taylor, Miss Lawson and Mr Johns, and Mr J. Hoskins. The artists for the evening were Miss Jean and Master Ennis Chisholm, who gave novelty dances. Alex. Campbell's orchestra supplied the music, and Mr Trevor-Smith acted as master of ceremonies. -

RAWHITI HOCKEY CLUB

DANCE AT NEW BRIGHTON Many guests spent an enjoyable time at the Rawhiti Hockey Club's dance held in the Masonic Hall, New Brighton. Music was played by Mrs W. McNair, and extras by Mr Neville Knowles. Mr F. Hobbs was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Gloria Banfield and Mr M. B. Hayes. Those present included Mesdames A. Buckley, J. Weir, Morris, Misses Ngaire Cattermole, Margaret Hobbs, Dorothy Moses, Joyce - Cattermole, Ethne Buckley, Gloria Banfield, Nancy Daniel. Freda Cole, Joan Tindall, Hazel Nankivell, Peggy Brook-Taylor, M. Cook, Noeline Chapman, Edna Melhuish, Irene Donohue, and Pat. Boyland.
