LODGE SOCIAL AT HORNBY

Women members of the Loyal Orange Lodge, Hornby, held a "hard-up social in the Hornby Hall, and guests danced to the music of Fred Smith's dance band. Mr Reid played for extra dances. A Monte Carlo dance Was won by Miss Stevenson and partner, and a prize for the best "hard-up" costumes was won by Miss Jean Manson and Mr J. ManAmong those present were Mesdames W. James. N. BASKETBALL CLUB'S GUESTS NORTH BEACH OLD GIRLS The popularity of the dances organiqpri bv the North Beach Old Girls Club was shown by the record attendance at the club's annual dance held in the Memorial Hall on Say evening. The entertainment was the most successful yet held by of St. Stephen's (Ashburton) Girls' Basketball Club were guests of honour, and other honoured guests were the Hon. D. G. Sulliyan and Mrs Sullivan, the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs E. L. Smith), and a number of officers and crew of HMS. Achilles. Mr V W Colville and Mrs A. E. Marriott (president) welcomed the guests. Mr Sullivan thanked the patrons for their welcome, and the Mayor extended a hearty welcome to the representatives of H.M.S. Achilles. The distribution of snowballs, streamers, and novelties added to the gaiety of the scene. , The committee in charge of the arrangements comprised Mrs A. E. Marriott (president), Misses Olive Sands, Phyllis Norrie, Nancy Marriott, Marion Parker, Joan Nelson, and Eunice Gray. The music was played 1 by Alex Campbell's Gaiety Orchestra, and Mr T. WOMEN'S DIVISION OF

There was a good attendance at the September, meeting of the Hurunui provincial executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, all branches, except two, being represented The meeting was held" in the %aiau Hall, and Mrs M. Bethell presided. The housekeeper report stated that nine engagements had been filled since May, but that many applications had been refused owing to the continued shortage of housekeepers. The dressmaker was still constantly engaged by several of the branches. The Southland dressmaking scheme was discussed, and it was decided to engage a tutor for the April-May session, if the required number of pupils could be enrolled.

It was also agreed that a remit concerning the election of Dominion officers should be sent to the Dominion executive.

As the result of a suggestion made at the last meeting, that all members of the Hurunui branches should hold a combined social gathering, Mrs Bethell invited branches to "Pahau Pastures" for an afternoon in December. The invitation was gratefully accepted, as was that of Mrs SproSen', who invited the executive to meet next time at Horsley Downs, Hawarden. At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs Bethell, on behalf of the executive, thanked the Lyndon-Waiau delegates for their entertainment. MOTUKARARA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Motukarara branch of the Women's. Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held recently. Mrs Simmons presided in the absence of the president. It was decided to support the Makogai leper appeal. Members were asked to take gifts or donations to the next meeting. Results of competitions were:—Miniature garden on dinner plate, Miss W. Withel 1, Mrs Simmons 2; marmalade, Mrs Smith and Mrs N. Withel (equal) 1, Mrs Joblin 2. - A report of the Dominion conference of the division will be given by Mrs G. Templeton at the next'meeting. WEST MELTON Mrs R. S. Roper (president) presided over the September meeting of the West Melton branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. ... Mrs I. L. M. Coop, Kaituna, gave a talk on the recent conference in Wellington. Miss Ruth Langdale-Hunt gave a demonstration on rug-making in wool. . „

WOMEN'S INSTITUTES TEMPLETON Mrs Curragh presided at the monthly meeting of the Templeton Women's Institute. One new member was welcomed. Arrangements were completed for the sixth birthday celebrations, to be held on October 11. An address on the work of the institutes was given by Mrs Ross Macdonald, president of the North Canterbury Federation. Winners of the competitions were:— Laundered shirt and collar, Mrs H. Curragh 1, Mrs W. J. Taylor 2, Mrs G. Henshaw 3; flowers, Mrs G. Henshaw, 1, Mrs H .B. Kissel 2, Mesdames Clinton and W. J. Taylor (equal) 3; loaf, Mrs J. F. Writfht. .

SPOTSWOOD Mrs A. W. Leaman presided at the monthly meeting of the Spotswcsod Women's Institute. The motto was '*Make your hearts like gardens, fair and full of flowers." The prize given by Miss F. Burt and awarded to the member with the most entries at the show of work was presented to Mrs T. Stevenson. An offer was accepted for a prize for the best scenic study of a place in New Zealand. Mesdames T. Stevenson and A. E. Page were appointed delegates to the half-yearly conference of the North Canterbury Federation. Mrs C. Gard'ner gave a travel talk on North Auckland. Competitions resulted —Sponge roll: Mrs C. F. Barnes 1. Something new from something old: Mrs T. Stevenson 1, Miss E. Burt 2. Blossom: Mrs C. F. Barnes 1, Mrs I. Stevenson 2. Spring flowers: Mrs T. DOMETT The Domett Women's Institute celebrated its seventh birthday recently by holding a concert and dance in the Cheviot Town Hall. Items were given by Miss J. Dickson (tap-dance and songs), and Mrs Brown (songs). Two pjays were presented by the Scargill Players. In "The Language of Love," the , cast. was Mesdames Naismjth, McDonald. Bristow, H. Gallop W. Fleming. Misses N. Stone, and D. Johnson. In the second play "The Scarlet Coconut," the players were Mrs T. D. McDonald. Miss D. Johnson Messrs Shadrach, C. Tomlinson, I. Bradley. Dance music was played by Mrs Brown, Miss G. Morgan, and Mr W. Hughes.
