DUTY ON NAILS AND WHITE LEAD

PRESENT RATE EXTENDED FOR A YEAR (»■<• iMOeunoa TiLmaiAM.) WELLINGTON, September 22. A notice published in this evening’* Gazette intimates that action has been taken by Order-in-Council to maintain the present duties on nails and white lead in oil lor a further year, that i®i. until October 31, 1330. When the tariff was revised in 1934, provision was made for the abolition j of the duty under the British preferential tariff on these articles after Ocr j tober 31, 1936. In view of the trade •j dlreussions then pending with the United Kingdom, steps were taken in July, 1936. to extend the duties until October 31, 1937. A further extension of one year, that is. until October 31, 1938, was arranged in October, 1937. after the return of the Minister for Customs (the Hon. W. Nash) from abroad, negotiations with the United Kingdom not having been completed. The Hon. Mark Fagan, acting for Mr Nash, said to-day that these negotiations were not yet finished, and the extension now provided for had been arranged in order that the question of duties on such goods might be considered at a time when the. tariff on United Kingdom goods was under review.
